Where do we begin? I’m sure I can speak for everyone when I say it’s been a fucking weird one. On the one hand, COVID-19 gave me the headspace and time (because I couldn’t do much else after work) to really put some effort into Reap and get the damn thing launched, something which I’ve been working on for a while.
On the other hand, it totally stumped my efforts in being able to promote a Jiu-Jitsu brand. Any form of rolling or grappling has basically been illegal since this whole shit show began, which has made it rather difficult to get any promo shoots of people wearing our gear. Which, is basically the cornerstone of any online business. I know people have still been training, but I didn’t want to shut any gyms down by posting pictures of anywhere that may still be rolling, wearing our gear.
You may have noticed, that due to an inherent lack of Jiu-Jitsu being done, we switched gears and broadened our horizons. I have always loved skateboarding and I felt that it’s subcultural similarities with Brazilian jiu-jitsu were worth exploring, including surfing too, so we branched out. We will always be a Jiu-Jitsu brand at heart and this will continue to be the core of everything we do, but there is definite crossover between board culture and forms of martial arts such as ours.
This year we’ve put out a tonne of T-shirts, long sleeves, a few hoodies, a rash guard and a goddamn skateboard. So what’s happening in 2021?
We’re going to kickstart January with a collaborative T-shirt designed by my good friend and awesome Tattoo Artist Reggie Breeze. It’s off to print currently, and as soon as I have some promotional material (fuck knows how we’ll do that in Tier 4, but I’ll figure something out) after that, I want to explore some snapbacks and beanies, it’s so cold out there goddamn we need them.
For the rest fo the year, we’ll continue to put out some dope clothing, but also a No-Gi set (rash guard, shorts and spats available separately or together) another skateboard in the summer and I’m looking into getting some super limited surfboards made, I imagine these will be pre-orders to start with and we’ll take it from there. If we all get vaccinated and can beat the fuck out of each other on the mats again, I’ll even design a Gi with a badass grim reaper on the back to strike fear into the hearts of your competitors.
Before signing off, I’d like to say thanks to each and every one of you for supporting us this year, whether it’s by buying some gear, sharing a post on instagram or even just asking me how it’s going. It can be really, really daunting throwing yourself into something like this, so to know that people like my designs, ethos and style makes it very fulfilling and can give me a much needed kick up the arse sometimes to keep going and develop the brand even further.
Say good riddance to 2020 with some badass whiskey, and welcome in 2021 with optimism and black coffee to smash your goals on Jan 1st.
